Surgiu em Faro um importante movimento levado a cabo pelo grupo The Modernist: o Modernist Weekend iniciado em 2022 e dedicado à arquitetura modernista da cidade, protagonizada sobretudo por Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921-2016), arquiteto formado no Porto e com uma intensa e genuína produção arquitetónica na região do Algarve.
No âmbito do Faro Modernist Weekend 2023, realizou-se a conferência Modernist Heritage, para a qual foi convidado Carlos Oliveira Santos, bem como Adam Stech, do colectivo checo Okolo, e Stacy Suaya, jornalista norte-americana da Wallpaper.
Carlos lembrou um dos primeiros exemplos do contra-modernismo, a Encíclica do papa Pio X, de 1907, condenando o modernismo como a síntese de todos as heresias, seguida, três anos depois, pelo juramento anti-modernismo do clero católico romano, que durou até 1967. Depois, reafirmando o legado modernista, Carlos sublinhou a ideia de Niemeyer de que o principal, mais do que a arquitetura, é a vida, as pessoas e este mundo injusto que devemos modificar. Algo reafirmado, recentemente, por Diébédo Francis Kéré, o prémio Pritzker 2022 e o primeiro ganho por um africano. A arquitetura tem de ter por base as pessoas. Carlos Oliveira Santos lembrou ainda o conceito de Ulrich Beck sobre a necessidade de um segundo modernismo, que tenha em conta as problemáticas consequências da modernidade e a nova consciência sobre o bem-estar das pessoas e do planeta. O nosso dever é, assim, o de prosseguir com o modernismo através de respostas e intervenções que resolvam os imensos problemas que as pessoas atualmente enfrentam.
O grupo The Modernist é constituído por Angélique e Christophe de Oliveira e um novo Faro Modernist Weekend já foi anunciado para 2024.
An important movement carried out by The Modernist group emerged in Faro, the Southern city of Portugal. The Modernist Weekend started in 2022 and is dedicated to the city’s modernist architecture led mainly by Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921-2016). He was educated as an architect at the Porto Faculty of Architecture and developed intense and genuine architectural work in the Algarve region.
As part of the Faro Modernist Weekend 2023, a conference was held about Modernist Heritage. Carlos Oliveira Santos was invited as well as Adam Stech, from the Czech collective Okolo, and Stacy Suaya, an American journalist from Wallpaper.
Carlos recalled one of the first examples of counter-modernism, the Pope Pius X’s 1907 Encyclical condemning modernism as the synthesis of all heresies, followed three years later by the anti-modernism oath of the Roman Catholic clergy, which lasted until 1967. Then, Carlos highlighted Niemeyer’s idea that more than architecture the main thing is life, people, and attempting to make this unjust world a better place in which to live. Something reaffirmed recently by Diébédo Francis Kéré, the 2022 Pritzker Prize and the first African to win it. Architecture is about people. Finally, Carlos referred to Ulrich Beck’s concept about a second modernism that considers the problematic consequences of modernity and the actual awareness about the well-being of people and the planet. Our duty is therefore to continue modernism through responses and interventions that solve the immense problems that people currently face.
The Modernist group is composed of Angélique and Christophe de Oliveira, and a Faro Modernist Weekend has already been announced for 2024.
